Haiti Update 1
0 Comments
We are just getting started on Day 2 in Haiti this morning, but first a Day One Update.
Visiting Pastor Gaetan Alcegaire & Yaveh Shamma Kids Home & School
Our first day in Haiti we were blessed to visit some great Haitian friends. We started off visiting Pastor Gaetan Alcegaire who pastors his church, runs the Yaveh Shamma Kids Home and the Yaveh Shamma Community School. We had the Austin New Church team with us and it was a joy to be able to walk through and share all that God had done in the last 17 months. Where there previously was a pastors family huddling with 30 orphans in tents there is now 1) housing for 30 kids, 2) a school that serves 175 children, 3) a biosand water filter and 4) 30 kids who are sponsored.
Junior Bataille
Our next stop was a lunch visit with Junior Bataille. Junior is Haitian born, grew up in the US and graduated from Duke University. Shortly afterwards he moved back to Haiti to work towards Haiti's renewal. Everywhere Junior goes he sees potential and it's infectious. He shared Haiti's rich history and it's struggles from external and internal forces. His hope is to see Haiti restored to its rich history.
Pastor Jean St-Cyr
Our last stop was with Pastor Jean St-Cyr in the largest tent city in Haiti. He is a generous pastor who spiritually cares for over 40,000 people in some of the harshest conditions. During our time we agreed to sponsor a masonry training program for 25 students that will provide job training and small business loans for the students to begin working in their new trade.
Afterwards we enjoyed celebrating Jesus with them during their Thursday night church service. And we were blessed to hear Brian and Lamar Stockton from ANC sing 'A Change is Gonna Come' by Sam Cooke for the congregation. Good times for all.
Please continue praying for our time and follow Help End Local Poverty Haiti updates at @helpendpoverty.
With you for Jesus,
Jacob Vanhorn
