Jesus Changes Everything: Suffering

It has been said by some that suffering is a human condition. The scriptures tell us that while we suffer now, there was a time that we didn't suffer and there is a future where there will be no more suffering. In between those times, it is correct to say that suffering is part of the broken human condition. In this message we look at suffering, how many of us seek to avoid it, minimize it or medicate it, how we can find meaning it in, and how it can form and shape us as people of perseverance, endurance and hope. And we see how God joins us in our suffering through Jesus, and ultimately how he defeats suffering.

Jesus Changes Everything: Rest

Life makes us weary. Whether it's our work, our relationships, our activity, or our lack so rest, we far too often find ourselves tired and weary. We then seek rest and renewal from broken things that offer no rest at all, leaving us just as weary. However, Jesus calls all who are weary and heavy laden to come to Him and He will give them rest. True rest is found in Christ.

Jesus Changes Everything: Jesus is Our Greatness

The call to greatness, to great influence, to great achievements, and to having a great story is a strong draw. For some we attempt to scale to it's heights, for others, the size of the call withers us. In this message, we look at Matthew 20:20-28 where Salome, the mother of James & John, asks Jesus to let her sons sit at the right and left hand of Jesus throne. In doing so, they are seeking authority, power, position and greatness. The comforting thing to our souls is that through the cross, Jesus is Our Greatness. He scaled to great heights of obedience to the Father in His sacrifice on the cross, taking on the punishment due us. He drinks the cup we cannot drink. Because He is great, we can let him have the throne, and we can lay down our needs to control everything around. Because He is our greatness, we can trust His leadership. At the same time, we are called to greatness in God's conforming us to the image of Jesus through the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Himself says that we will do greater works than He. The key is that these great things are done through His greatness, not ours. And that is actually a pretty freeing thing.

Jesus Changes Everything: Dating and Marriage

It's no secret that marriages are in trouble in the US. Inside the church and outside the church marriage continues to take hits and the wreckage of husbands, wives and children are all around. Is it possible that we have a poor understanding of marriage? If so, it would seem that the church does too. In this message we look at what God, the author and creator of life, tells us about marriage. We examine how marriage is grounded in the Trinitarian Godhead and in Christ and His church. And we discuss moving marriage from commodity to covenant. Lastly we hit up what the scripture is talking about when we hear the word 'submission'. Is it a bad deal? Or could it actually be perfectly designed by God for our joy and sanctification?

Jesus Changes Everything: Haiti

We believe that Jesus Changes Everything, even countries. We believe that Jesus desires change and renewal in Haiti and among Haitians. In this message we share a brief history of Haiti, the damage from the earthquake, some stories from the ground and our response, in partnership with Help End Local Poverty to 1) Rescue orphans, providing shelter and sponsorships, to 2) Restore housing through new homes and to 3) Renew access to clean water by working with Living Water International in their effort to repair 500 water wells. We also discuss some other efforts to that will be coming later in due time. Many of us desire to help, but don't know how, we are helping with the why and the how.

Jesus Changes Everything: Obedience

Obedience is a dirty word in some circles, conjures up fear in others and is a warm blanket to some. Even for those who share a common faith in Christianity can find that what constitutes 'obedience' can vary greatly from church to church, and that is a sign of danger because it shows that obedience is determine by our church culture rather than by Jesus and His scriptures. In the Gospel of Matthew we see the greatest commandment is to love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Not only does all of obedience rest in that commandment, it also shows that obedience is not first in a list of do's and dont's but first in loving Jesus more fully and giving yourself to others. It's first a devotion issue and one that draws us near to God if we will cultivate the faith that rests in us as Christians. The result is growth as a follower of Christ and growth in seeing others renewed by giving your life away.

Jesus Changes Everything: Our Neighbors, Our Sanctification

s children many of us ran the neighborhood, and knew all the neighborhood kids. Playing in the streets was our refuge from the perceived tyranny of our parents. As we grow up, what was a place of exploration and refuge, our neighborhoods, have become nameless houses we drive by on the way into our new places of refuge, our homes. As we grow older our relationships with our neighbors become more surface level at best while we retreat into our homes and to television shows with people in make believe 'real relationships'. We see the drama of life, its celebrations, tensions, joy, brokenness, hopes, and fears on the television while real drama, celebrations, tensions, joy, brokenness, hopes and fears play themselves out 20 feet from our kitchen windows. When we do see it, it is often as voyeurs watching 'that family' argue in the front yard again. In this sermon we see two people ask about how to find life, followed up by a question that involves who are neighbors are and how we should be around them. In those answers we discover that God has set it up so that those who live around us are in need of grace, mercy and truth, and are instruments of Gods grace in revealing who God us to us and to our neighbors.

Jesus Changes Everything: Our Work

Most of us spend over 40 hours a week at work. For many of us it is the most diverse space in our life where we are alongside different ethnicities, religions and personality types. In the entertainment industry, our workplaces are often settings for comedies and the subject of punchlines. 'Thank God is Friday', 'Hump Day' and the 'Monday Morning Blues' are all terms that convey our sense of futility in our work. And they are on to something. In this sermon we look at how we were created for work, why work is so hard and how Jesus changes the way that we work, primarily by changing who our real employer is and then in showing how we work can both demonstrate and declare the gospel of Jesus.

Jesus Changes Everything: Freedom

Outside of Christ, freedom is an illusion. We think we are free agents making free choices, but in actuality we are guided, formed and shaped by all the competing stories, fears, desires and hopes around us and our own indwelling rebellion. Our desire to be approved by others, to be in the accepted camp compels us. Or the opposite occurs where we simply rebel against the approved camp, and retreat into another camp that rebels in unison against the first. Christ calls us to a freedom from oppression from those who hold unnecessary rules over us, but also calls us to hold that freedom without offense to others and to not make it a freedom to more rebellion. Our freedom is not to rebellion, but freedom from sin's indwelling presence. In Galatians 5 we learn about this tension and what God provides for us in Christ, freedom.

Jesus Changes Everything: Evangelism

Some of us have seen evangelism done well, many of us have been wounded by poor evangelism attempts and nearly all of us have misconceptions about evangelism. What is it? How do I it? Is it necessary? Etc. In this sermon we look at evangelism primarily as the telling of a story of good news. A good news story that confronts the broken ways we think about ourselves, God and our world and shows us the true story of God's redemptive plan throughout history, His pursuit of us in His Son Jesus Christ. Also in this sermon, we look at 1) the message of evangelism, and how it combats what has become common in today's church, the oddity of the practice of evangelism as a 'new work' to perform to make God and others happy with us, 2) the dwelling place of evangelism deep inside us and renewing us and 3) the overflow of evangelism that declares and demonstrates the gospel story to others.

Jesus Changes Everything: Community

'I'm spiritual but not religious.' That phrase has been growing more common these days, especially so in Austin. But what does it mean? For some it means they reject truth claims and for others it means they reject 'organized religion'. What did Jesus have to say about religion? Are we designed for community? What would a biblical 'organized' community of Christians look like? In this sermon we look at the earliest church community and examine it to see if organized religion is so bad after all.

Jesus Changes Everything: Discipleship

Too often today the American church has a distorted view of what discipleship looks like. We read tons of books, attend classes and seminars, and still miss what Jesus set forth in discipleship. When Jesus began his ministry, he started by calling regular men to come and follow him. He set the example of discipleship by looking to his Heavenly Father and doing what his Father did. He then invited his disciples into relationship with him so that they too could do as he did. In this sermon we examine what it looks like to be a disciple of Christ and to disciple others.

Jesus Changes Everything: Our Relationships

When sin entered into the world through Adam and Eve's disobedience, relationships were broken. Both our relationships with God and with others were now hindered. But then Christ came and restored our relationships through his cross and resurrection. In this sermon, Adam looks at four aspects of relationships that we are called to as believers: entering into each other's lives, identifying with one another, forgiving one another, and loving one another.

Jesus Changes Everything: Our Identity as Children of God

We are a story formed people, stories all around us trying to inform and shape our identity. Where we were born, our parents, our education, our friends, our jobs & hobbies, what's been done to us are all things we are constantly weighing, assigning value to, and finding our identity shaped by. But the most important story in the way of our identity and shaping who we are is found as adopted sons and daughters of God through Jesus Christ. Through Jesus we can approach God the Father, saying 'Daddy, Father'. In this sermon we take a look at the biblical rhythms of Acts 42-47, but with a fresh look at how these rhythms are outflows of our identity in Christ.

Jesus Changes Everything: Dynamics of Change

Christianity without Jesus, his truth and the Holy Spirit is hard. And it is rampant throughout the church in America. We know that we are supposed to grow in our faith, and far too often we try it in our own strength, rather than through the Spirit, which is God's design for our growth. Far too often we say 'thanks Jesus for the salvation, we got it from here'. It's just doesn't work that way. In this sermon we look at change through Jesus, what has been accomplished via the cross, what God says about us, the freedom from sin in Christ and how the Helper help us grow in Christ.

Jesus Changes Everything: Follow the Leader (John 21:20-25)

In our last sermon on the Gospel of John, we step into a scene of Jesus with His disciples. Almost immediately after Jesus has given Peter his calling and told him to follow Him, we see Peter looking back, that is, away from Christ, to compare himself to John, curious of what his calling will be in sharing in Christ's sufferings. Too often when Christ calls us to follow Him, we look away from our leader. Either we compare ourselves to others, question our calling, or simple stop following Christ in order to answer our call. But Christ has called us to follow Him, His path, His footsteps, simple like a child playing follow the leader. His call continues to be and will forever remain, "Follow me."

Jesus Changes Everything: Maturation & Commission (John 21:1-19)

From a lowly, impulsive, rough fisherman to a close friend, disciple of Jesus and shepherd of God's people, we see the calling, growth, stumbles and restoration of Simon Peter through the gracious ministry of Jesus. At their first meeting Peter is fishing and feels unclean before Jesus, and at one of their last meetings Peter is again fishing and rushes to be near Jesus. The difference in the two episodes is Jesus' life lived before Peter, a life of mercy, justice, grace and renewal. A life that invites broken people near to Him. A life that restores and renews. And a life that invites us to follow Jesus in bringing life and renewal to others.

Exposing The Heart Through Trials (Numbers 11:4-15)

After the Israelites escaped from captivity in Egypt through the leadership of Moses and by the the multitude of miracles from the Lord, they began complaining about the Lord's provision. They begin wishing they were back in Egypt, in captivity, so that they could eat meat. Moses too complains about the task the Lord has given him and even wishes that the Lord would simply kill him. All the while, God's chosen people forget to see what the Lord is doing and all that He has done to save them. Ultimately, Jesus Christ is our savior, our perfect Moses, who is tempted and tried yet does not sin. He is the ultimate example to look to when experience trials and temptation, because He has overcome them.

Jesus Changes Everything: He Is Risen (John 20)

After Jesus' crucifixion, the disciples didn't know what to do. They hid in their homes with the doors locked. Their savior was dead, or so they thought. When they went and visited the tomb, Jesus was no longer there, he had risen! However, the disciples weren't so sure until Jesus, himself, appeared to them. Because of Christ's resurrection, we also now have victory over sin and ultimately death.

Jesus Changes Everything: It Is Finished, So Rest (John 19:16-42)

In this last half of John 19, Jesus is taken to the cross, brutally crucified and just before giving up His life, he says, "It is finished". What might sound like an odd thing to the onlookers to hear, is actually Jesus' statement that the purpose that He had come for was complete. Starting with Genesis 3 and seen again in the Garden of Gethsemane we see the provision of a Savior and the resoluteness of the Savior in completing the work that the Father had given Him to perform. Specifically that of becoming sin, taking on the sin of the world, on the cross so that we might be saved through faith. On the cross the wrath of God was poured out on Jesus and absorbed by Jesus. For those who are in Christ, there is no more wrath to absorb and no condemnation for us. We have reconciliation, peace, shalom with God through Christ. Having full approval with God in Christ, we are able to rest from seeking approval elsewhere. Seeing Christ on the cross also emboldens us to take our private faith and make it public, for others to hear, see and know of the beauty of Jesus. It is finished, so rest.

Jesus Changes Everything: Choose the Right King (John 19:1-15)

Jesus is the ultimate man's man. Not just cause he is God in the flesh, but also because of the punishment and mocking that he absorbed so that we might be saved from slavery to sin, and freed from the oppression of sin in all it's forms. When denied as King by His own people and offered up to Pontius Pilate, the governor under Caesar, for crucifixion, Jesus responds with truth and courage in the face of brutal beatings and tauntings. Think about it, the Creator of the universe allowed the creation to mock Him and beat Him, so that He might take on the wages of sin for us. In this weeks message we see Jesus resolute before Pilate, and we see Pilate struggling to understand who Jesus is and exactly what is going with the Jewish leaders in their totally out of character appeal to Caesar as their own king. The Jewish leaders choose the wrong king, Pilate is confused about what kind of King Jesus might be, and in the end, Jesus reveals that all authority rest in God.

Jesus Changes Everything: The Truth of Two Kingdoms (John 18:28-40)

What constitutes truth? And where is it found? Is it relative to our upbringing and culture? Is there some consistent truth for all people, for all history? After appearing before the High Priests and being denied three times by His disciple Peter, Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor in Jerusalem in the second half of John 18. In this exchange Jesus tells Pilate that His Kingdom is not of this world, but of another, and that He has come to this world to declare that He is King over all, and that all truth exists within that truth and that all truth is understood in light of that truth. If we deny it like the religious leaders of the day, or ignore it as Pilate did, we end up choosing the lie of our own Kingdom and choose evil. Jesus saves us from this by declaring to us the truth of His Kingdom and reign.

Jesus Changes Everything: Resolve & Fear (John 18:1-27)

Life presents us with many challenging circumstances, some of them are seemingly neutral (where to go to school, who to marry, careers) while others are more oppositional in nature, as in something is opposing us. Other challenges are born from within bad thinking, feeling and acting patterns, how we relate to God, ourselves and others. There are often two ways to respond in most situations, with courage that leads to resolve, or with fear which leads to our wilting under the challenge. In John 18:1-27 we see Jesus and Peter in different roles, but in the same rooms when confronted with opposition and challenge. Jesus, in obedience to the Father, chooses resolve, even while knowing what is coming next. Peter, giving in to fear and confusion, first lashes out and then wilts in the challenge. In this text we see the difference that can be made when we truly know & trust who Jesus is, and when we get confused cause he is not who we want Him to be. In the end of the story, Jesus is our resolve for us, and through the Spirit we can be empowered toward trust, courage and resolve as well.

Jesus Changes Everything: That They May Be One (John 17:20-26)

It doesn't take us much time reviewing the newspaper to know that our world is broken, from natural disasters to disease, famine and war, the world is in turmoil. At Soma our response to a broken world is mercy, development and evangelism. Without evangelism, everyone still dies at the end of their life and even if we could find some utopian society, the earth would be swallowed up by the sun one day. But it's not the kind of evangelism your thinking of. In this final sermon from Jesus' prayer in John 17 we see Jesus calling us evangelism, to commend the truth and life of Christ to the world, through the oneness of the church body. With dozens, if not hundreds, of different denominations how is this possible? It's possible because Jesus would call us to be bound by Him, rather than by our church community. And in our being bound by and connected to Jesus our unity and oneness can be found. And people would experience life through it.

Jesus Changes Everything: Jesus Prays - Gospel (John 17:1-5)

After walking with the disciples for three years, Jesus has shown them the Father, served them, cleansed them, called them to abide, told them of the Helper to come and warned them that the world would hate them because of Him. In this final chapter of what it is consider His 'Farewell Discourse", Jesus begins to the Father on their behalf. In John 17:1-5 we see Jesus explain to us that eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, the One that the Father had sent. We compare what the world seeks in eternal life, what American evangelicalism lives as eternal life and what the bible teaches as eternal life. The scriptures teach that eternal life is not having more stuff than everyone else, or being a more moral person than others, but in knowing the living God. In this opening of His prayer, Jesus sets us up for the handoff of the mission of introducing others to Jesus.

Jesus Changes Everything: Ask Well (John 16:16-33)

Most everyone prays, even atheist sometimes pray. And generally when we pray we are asking for something that will increase our happiness and joy. How we pray and what we pray for reveals how we view God, ourselves and others around us. A question to ponder: If all your prayers so far in 2010 were answered, would the world be a better place or would you just be more comfortable? In John 16:16-33 Jesus tells his disciples that their path to joy is found in asking the Father in the name of Jesus. In this sermon we find out that effectual prayers are found by those who abide in Jesus, who have the words of Jesus abiding in them and who have their passions in check and renewed by the truths of God.

Jesus Changes Everything: The Helper Helps (John 16:1-15)

The Christian life can be hard. Not because of Jesus and the mission of renewal that He calls us to. But because we fight that renewal so hard in our own lives. Instead we stick to old thought and behavior patterns that hurt us, rather than help us, or we think to highly of ourselves while we compare ourselves to someone that we are better than. Jesus knew that would be the case for us, which is why He sends us the Helper to help. The Helper (the Holy Spirit) helps us by 1) making us aware of our bad patterns by convicting us of sin, by 2) showing us the bankruptcy of trusting in our fleeting accomplishments and by 3) defeating the devil which tempts us. Through obedience in hearing and trusting the truth of the Helper we grow in our obedience, in our mission and in our glorifying of God.

Jesus Changes Everything: Your Not Too Stinky for Jesus (John 11:28-44)

In this final messianic sign, Jesus shows both his compassion and authority in weeping over the death of Lazarus and resurrecting him after he has been dead four days. Jesus enters our sorrow, grieves with us and gives us life. Even if we think we are too dead, too stinky, too dirty.

Jesus Changes Everything: Jesus And The Father Are One (John 10:22-42)

In John 10 Jesus claims that He and the Father are one. In the gospel of John, Jesus continually shows us that God is more complex than we understand. In this sermon we introduce the trinity through several passages throughout scripture, unpack the idea that the Godhead is equal in essence yet distinct in their roles, and how this is modeled in the church and our families.

Jesus Changes Everything: Jesus vs. Religion (John 10:1-21) (Bad Audio)

This sermon covers John 10:1-21 in which Jesus is sharing a parable about a shepherd, his sheep and those who threaten the sheep. In it, we see the difference between religion and the gospel of Jesus.

As part of the sermon we discuss 1) the curse test, 2) the circumcision test, 3) the generosity test and 4) the condemnation test.

We were created by God for work, to cultivate and create new things. In the fall, work became harder. Often, our ideas of work make it work harder than it already is. In this sermon we will examine a 'theology or work' .

Communities of Renewal: Renewed Minds and Hearts

The bible describes those who prefer sinfulness and rebellion as darkened in their understanding, as having a hardness of heart toward the truth of the gospel.

As Christians we are given a regenerated heart, an enlightened heart that is renewed and transformed by God and the scriptures.

This new heart removes a spirit of fear and places in a desire to worship God.

Gospel of John: Equality with God

After Jesus heals the invalid (paralytic) at the Pool of Bethesda, he is confronted by religious leaders of the day and questioned. During that questing Jesus makes the clear case that He is the Son of God and equal with God. He then lists off multiple witnesses that testify as to who he is, including John the Baptist, the works/miracles/signs of Jesus, the Father, the scriptures, and Moses.

The World We All Want: Blessings, Wanderings, Kings & Rebellion

This is part 3 in the series The World We All Want, entitled Blessings, Wanderings, Kings & Rebellion. It covers that we have been blessed to be a blessing (Genesis 12:1-3), that when we fail to believe God's promises we end up wandering (Numbers 14:7-10), that we already have a King in God but that we desire to have rulers like other nations (1 Samuel 8), and that we continue to rebel in God's call to bless others (Isaiah 58).
